Children (infancy – 5th grade)

Since our church’s founding in 1955, children have been central to the life of our congregation. We value children, and take great care of their emotional and spiritual development, as well as provide support for parents.

Sunday School

Sunday School

Experienced care for infants and toddlers

Our preschooler and pre-K classes are welcomed to our nursery and walkers classrooms by a compassionate and lively team of teachers who use a workshop rotation curriculum. They follow the same Bible story for one month, engaging Bible stories in a variety of ways.

Curriculum-based classes led by volunteer teachers

Classes for each age group: (preschool, pre-K, K, 1st & 2nd, 3rd – 5th)
Children in K – 5th grades take part in a kid-friendly, teacher-friendly classes based on the workshop rotation model that engages children through different learning styles. Each Sunday, we begin will all grades gathering together in our “movement” room, where the theme is introduced and we share concerns and celebrations with one another and have a time of singing before being dismissed by class to our class. Each week, your child will visit a different workshop, taught by different teachers, but led by the same adult shepherd for continuity of experience. The workshops explore the same Biblical story or concept, but with different activities each week. Every 3 – 4 weeks, a new theme is introduced.

Kids in Worship

Kids in Worship

At NDPC, we believe worship includes children. All children attend the beginning of every worship service. Each Sunday before the sermon, children are invited to come forward for their own “Word in Worship,” led by lay members or staff. These child-friendly messages focus on the scripture of the day, or the season of the church year.

After Word in Worship, children 1st grade and younger are led to the Sunday School classrooms for “Extended Session,” a time of supervised play, which continues until the end of worship. During the summer (June-August), the same structured playtime is offered during worship.

Extended Session (during worship)

Extended Session (during worship)

Infants and children are always welcome in worship. However, we realize not all preschoolers enjoy sitting through an entire worship service, and we offer Extended Session for babies through kindergarteners.

For babies through 3 year olds, Extended Session is provided beginning immediately after church school through the end of the worship service.

For 4 year olds – 1st graders, Extended Session is provided immediately following Word in Worship. Our Nursery and Preschool rooms are located on the second floor of our Education building.

Volunteers staff Extended Session, and they will stay until you return to pick up your child after worship ends.

Music

Music

Music is an important part of the life of children at NDPC. Each Sunday, Clint Miller, our minister of music, leads the children in music at the beginning of Sunday School. The children participate in the leadership of worship by singing several times throughout the year. Children’s Choir gathers on Sunday evenings from 6-7:30 for a meal and rehearsal.
