Music

The Music ministry at North Decatur Presbyterian prepares and presents music of the highest quality and broadest scope for the purpose of worshipping God. Choirs and ensembles are created and rehearsed to meet the gifts and talents of this community of faith. All are invited to participate in our music ministry and find your particular niche for singing the song of God.

Balcony Choir

Our Balcony Choir rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. August through June. This 25 voice choir is open to all adults and Sr. High youth. Musical repertoire is varied and is augmented by special worship services and major works with orchestra. The Balcony Choir is the principal choir for the 11:00 a.m. worship service as well as other special worship service throughout the year. All who are interested in becoming a part of the Balcony Choir should contact the church office.

Children’s and Youth Choirs

The Children and Youth Choir rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. This choir is open to all children in grades 2 through 8. This choir sings in worship and participates in seasonal worship services, concerts and musicals. This musical experience provides our children with exceptional opportunities to explore their voice and musical place in the church through a variety of singing and movement activities. These children also participate in Spring Musicals and the Annual Christmas Pageant.

Handbell Choir

The Handbell Choir rehearsals are held each Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. This choir is open to all adults and Sr. High youth. Music reading skills are helpful but not necessary. The handbell choir leads worship approximately once a month and plays for other special services. The handbell choir occasionally participates in off-campus outreach by performing in nursing homes and retirement centers. Other events have included mass ringing festivals and workshops. If you are interested in becoming part of a handbell choir or serving as an occasional substitute, please contact the church office.

Our Pipe Organ

Our Zimmer Pipe Organ was completed in 2005, thanks to the generous contributions of so many wonderful people. Click here to view photographs of the organ, see some of the stages of its construction, and see a listing of the complete specifications.

Drum Circle

Would you like to share rhythm and get in tune with others and yourself? If you are interested in learning to drum and explore your spiritual rhythm, contact the church office. No specific date and time have been set for this ensemble.
“There is no audience – Everyone is part of the musical experience,
There is no rehearsal – The music … is improvised in the moment
There is no right or wrong – The drumcircle is a safe, permissive explorational environment.
There is no teacher – Instead, the drumcircle is lead by a facilitator who has the dual focus: to build musicality of the group while also building the sense of community and connection.”
– The Art and Heart of Drum Circles, Christine Stevens

Instrumentalists

Dust off your flute, clarinet, trumpet, violin or bagpipe! If you play an instrument we have a place for you. Many of our hymns, choral anthems, and other works can easily be enhanced with the sounds of an additional instrument. Please let the Minister of Music know how you can add your sound!!
