Peace & Justice
Mission:
The Peace & Justice Committee at North Decatur Presbyterian Church serves Christ by leading education and advocacy to transform structural forces towards peace, justice, and a respect for human rights.Co Chairs: Kathleen Allen and Janice Butt
Join us in our work either as a committee member or by helping in one of the three Peace and Justice work areas: Immigration, Mental Health and Prisons, and Beyond War. These areas are the focus of our goals, initiatives and programs for the next three years. Area 4 identifies issues of concern to be addressed with prayer and support of partner organizations.
Area 1 – Immigration has organized several opportunities for our congregation to learn about the current issues, including a panel discussion at Trinity Presbyterian as well as articles in the Communicator. We signed an overture to rescind the Georgia Immigration Law which was passed by the Presbytery and sent to the national church for discussion. Through April 29 an informative church School class, cosponsored by the Global Missions Committee, “Immigration: Issues and Answers” addresses issues Christians should consider in the immigration debate.
Area 2 – Mental Health and Prisons hosted a forum on the current conditions of mentally ill in Georgia Prisons with AJC reporter Steven Visser.
Area 3 – Beyond War developed a Peace Ambassador Initiative Brochure to invite members of the congregation to learn about important issues in our world.
Area 4 – We support efforts and connection with partner organizations and concerns to be addressed with prayer:- Child Sex Trafficking
- Hate Groups
- Nuclear weapons-free world
- Nuclear power
- International Covenant of Economic, Cultural and Social Human Rights
- Torture
- Grassroots anti-poverty organizing in DeKalb County
