What Makes for Peace?

North Decatur Presbyterian Church welcomes the Rev. Dr. Naim Ateek as our guest preacher for the 11am worship. Dr. Ateek is a Palestinian Anglican Priest born in Bisan, Palestine next to the River Jordan. His town was destroyed in 1948 and his family became refugees in Nazareth. He grew up in that city came to the United States for his college and seminary education. He then returned home to serve as a priest in Nazareth, Haifa, Ramallah, and was the Canon of St. George’s Cathedral in Jerusalem. Dr. Ateek is the Co-founder of the Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center in Jerusalem (www.Sabeel.org). He is the author of several books, including A Palestinian Theology of Liberation: The Bible, Justice, and the Palestine-Israel Conflict.

At our 8:30am worship, we welcome as our guest preacher Mr. Tarek Abuata. Born into a Palestinian Christian family in Bethlehem, Mr. Abuata moved to Texas during the first Palestinian Intifada when he was 12. After graduating from the University of Texas Law School, Tarek started his career working for the Negotiations Support Unit of the Palestinian Authority, researching legal and policy issues. Since, Abuata worked on the ground for 8 years as the coordinator of the Christian Peacemaker Team in Hebron www.cpt.org and served as the representative of Rev. Bernard LaFayette (protégé of Dr. King) training Palestinian youth in nonviolence principles and steps. Currently, Abuata serves as the Executive Director of Friends of Sabeel North America www.fosna.org.
