Does God choose a land and a people?

The Politics of God – The Arc of History

Everyone is familiar with “political” sermons: they take a contemporary ‘hot-button’ issue, the preacher gathers a few points from the Bible to prove s/he’s right, and the message sounds like talking points from the Democratic or Republican party, with the word “God” thrown in.

But in this heated election season, what if we approached the intersection of faith and politics not from the starting point of particular issues, but by looking at the most basic questions in political theology? This 4-part sermon series, “The Politics of God,” looks at the political drama that unfolds in 1 and 2 Samuel, and asks:

  1. Where is God in the arc of history? (Oct. 9, Rev. Lewicki)
  2. What does it mean to say God is sovereign over all? (Oct. 16, Rev. Lewicki)
  3. Does God choose a land and a people? (Oct. 23, Rev. Lewicki)
  4. How do people bear witness to God in our politics? (Oct. 30, Rev. Waltemath)
