What would happen to church if there were no singing? We might carry on for a few months out of force of habit, preachers bravely trying to carry worship with just the word. But slowly, people would stop coming. Joy would fade like newsprint in the sun; like fruit desiccating on the vine. Congregations would fold up and go away. There is no church I can imagine without song. There is no life I can imagine without song. Our calling is to unlock the music wrapped up in our bones, and sing it together. “Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises” (Psalm 98:4).
